Could you lose your medical license? It’s possible.

As a medical professional, such as a doctor, there is nothing worse than the thought of losing your license.

If you find yourself facing this problem, it’s imperative that you learn more about your situation and take the necessary steps to fight back.

Here’s something you need to know: A medical professional can be reported to their board at any time for a variety of reasons. Unfortunately, there are situations in which a person is wrongly targeted, such as because of their older age.

Here are some of the situations that can lead to the revocation of a medical license:

  • Impersonating another doctor. This is a serious act and one that can lead to a lost medical license.
  • Writing unnecessary and unauthorized prescriptions. This may sound like a harmless act, but it’s something that can lead to the loss of a medical license.
  • Misusing drugs and/or alcohol. It’s easy to believe that what you do on your own time should be kept out of your career, but this isn’t always the case. If your alcohol abuse, for example, is impacting your ability to do your job, it could result in a license suspension or revocation.
  • Medical negligence. A single medical malpractice claim does not necessarily mean you will lose your license. However, if this becomes a regular occurrence, it could lead to additional trouble.

These are just a few of the more common reasons why a doctor could lose his or her medical license.

If you receive a notice that makes you believe your license is in jeopardy, you should do two things:

  • Find out more about what led to this situation
  • Learn more about your legal rights, including the steps you can take to fight back

It’s possible that you could lose your medical license, but it’s also possible that you can implement a defense strategy that allows you to avoid the most serious trouble. Once you know your rights, it’s much easier to decide what you need to do to put this behind you in a timely manner.
