An Oakland Raiders cheerleader just filed a proposed class-action lawsuit on behalf of 40 current and former Raiderettes. She claims the Raiderettes’ contract violates both state and federal wage and hour laws -- and cheerleaders’ contracts with other NFL teams probably do, as well. She invites other dancers with similar problems to join. Twenty-six of the NFL’s 32 teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, have cheerleaders.
Minnesotans and sports fans around the country have by now likely become familiar with the dispute between former Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and leadership for the NFL team. Mr. Kluwe gained national recognition outside of the sports world for his activism on the issue of gay marriage and marriage equality, which began when he defended the actions of another player on a different team who was being targeted for their own support of the issue.
Last year, a former model on the game show "The Price Is Right" sued the show for pregnancy discrimination and wrongful termination. She alleged extremely poor treatment by the show's producers, who apparently criticized her for gaining weight and even removed her from the show's website. Ultimately, she says, they fired her.
Actress Jennifer Esposito, a series regular on the CBS hit show "Blue Bloods," suffers from celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that prevents the absorption of certain nutrients. It can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea to fatigue, weakness, and malnutrition. Her doctor has recommended she work a reduced schedule, but CBS allegedly refused to allow that.
